Buyer tools for specifying zippers and requesting the documents you need.

How to Specify a Zipper

Use this checklist when you request a quote or sample. More detail up front means a faster match on the right construction.

  1. Zipper Style

Open end, closed end, two-way, coverall, bag, or another finished style that matches your drawing.

  2. Chain Type

Coil, molded, metal, or a specialty path such as FR, RainDefyer®, or weldable.

  3. Chain Gauge

The size that fits the load, tape, and slider for your application.

  4. Slider Preferences

Lock type, material, and pull needs. A fuller style list for phase 3 can come later if you are still deciding.

  5. Zipper Tape Width

Tape width that fits your seam, weld, or sewing setup.

  6. Zipper Color

Color or lot needs, including any match to existing product.

  7. Special Needs

FR, water-resistant, weldable film, stainless hardware, or other program requirements.

  8. Quantity

Estimated order volume and whether you need samples first.

Drawings and samples are requested by reply email after you submit the Contact form. The form does not accept uploads.

FAQ

Short answers to common buyer questions.

Do zippers need to be lubricated?

Metal tooth zippers can be lubricated to allow easier “meshing” of the metal teeth. Zippers are a mechanical device much like a gear. Occasional lubrication of metal tooth zippers is perfectly acceptable. Use a wax like product or even a candle to apply directly to the metal teeth. Do not use a spray lubricant. Plastic tooth zippers (either molded plastic or coil) should NOT be lubricated. Lenzip molded plastic zippers are made from DuPont Delrin® acetal resins. These resins are very strong and need no lubrication. Coil zippers should never need lubrication.

What is the difference between coil, molded plastic, and metal zippers?

  • Coil zippers: Made from a continuous coil of polyester, these zippers are lightweight and flexible, suitable for garments, bags, and upholstery.
  • Molded plastic zippers: Feature individually molded plastic teeth, offering durability and resistance to environmental elements, ideal for outdoor gear, marine covers, and upholstery.
  • Metal zippers: Comprise metal teeth, providing strength and a classic appearance, commonly used in jeans, bags (especially leather bags), and heavy-duty applications.

Can I order custom zippers tailored to my specific needs?

Yes, Lenzip specializes in custom zipper solutions. We offer a variety of materials, lengths, colors, and slider options to meet your unique requirements. Our team is ready to assist you in designing the perfect zipper for your application.

Do you offer samples for testing and evaluation?

Absolutely. We provide samples to help you assess the suitability of our zippers for your application. Contact us with your requirements, and we'll arrange for sample delivery.

How should I maintain and care for my zippers?

  • Regular cleaning: Remove dirt and debris using a soft brush.
  • Lubrication: Apply a suitable zipper lubricant to metal zippers as needed.
  • Proper use: Avoid forcing zippers open or closed to prevent damage.

What should I do if my zipper gets stuck or separates?

If a zipper becomes stuck, gently remove any obstructions. For separating zippers, check for damaged teeth or sliders. In some cases, replacing the slider can resolve the issue. If problems persist, consult with our team for assistance.

Can I make my own separating (open end) zippers?

No. The components at the bottom of an open end zipper are fastened to the zipper with specialized equipment that includes a punch press and dies made specific to the size and shape of the component. Attempting to attach these components without this equipment will result in a mis-formed component that will not allow the zipper to operate properly. Lenzip does not sell pin and box components.

Are Lenzip zippers recognized by testing agencies such as Underwriter’s Laboratory®?

Yes, Lenzip produces a line of Fire Resistant zippers made with Nomex® tape that has been tested and certified to 5 of the most demanding applications for fire-fighting apparel and turnout gear.

Can you make zippers to any length?

Yes. We can make zippers from about 2″ long to over 8,000″ long.

Tell me about custom logo sliders

Lenzip can create a custom logo slider. Clean artwork is required in disk format and costs depend on the complexity of the logo. Samples would be submitted for your approval prior to the production run. There is a one-time, non-reoccurring cost to produce the mold necessary to create the custom pull. Costs for such molds are quoted individually, based on the tooling required. Minimum orders are required for production runs. These minimums may range from 10,000 pieces to 25,000 pieces depending on the size/shape of the pull. Costs for such custom pulls are quoted individually.

Can Lenzip dye-to-match?

On large orders, we can accommodate a certain color request. We do not provide sample dye lots or provide special order colors on small quantity runs of non-stocked colors.

Where are Lenzip zippers made?

Lenzip zippers are assembled in Columbia City, Indiana. Much of the raw material used to make Lenzip zippers is manufactured in the United States. Some components used are from foreign sources.
